While the internet has changed with a lot of users heading to sites like Facebook, Reddit, Twitter for general chat, with a lot of noise and zero solutions, there still seems to be a place for traditional web forums.

I have not used a traditional web forum for years, mainly because I didn't think it was useful, but what I found is that when a web forum focuses on a particular subject or field, you will get much better advice as these places are generally frequented by experts in that subject or field.

I recently needed to make an enquiry about the outdoor electrical sockets in our garden, and what I got from this was some excellent advice. I don't think I would have got this on places like Facebook, Reddit without being swamped with hundreds of opinions.

If you want to set up your own web forum, have access to a webserver with .php and .mysql / mariaDB installed there are still a few forums you can download and install.

phpBB is still one the most popular forums and is free to download and install. The requirements for phpBB can be found here

myBB is another popular form and is free to download and install. The requirements for myBB can be found here
