If you have already written the Linux Mint .iso file to your USB flash drive using Rufus on Windows please read on.

Ever since the YouTuber PewDiePie ditched Windows and installed Linux Mint on his PC, there has been a wave of new users wishing to try Linux Mint.

I have noticed a lot of users taking their first steps installing Linux Mint over on the Linux Mint Reddit channel and getting in to a bit of trouble, after installing Linux Mint alongside their Windows installations.

When you install Linux Mint alongside Windows the installation process will set up your partition, format the drive, install the OS and also install the Grub bootloader. On occasions the installation might fail, which might result in a Grub boot error, with no way of booting Windows or Linux Mint.

I wanted to offer some practical advice on the safest way to install Linux Mint if you rely heavily on Windows as your daily driver.

1. If you are using a PC, look at purchasing a new or used SSD drive. A 60GB SSD is more than sufficient for a standard Linux Mint install plus any other packages you may want to install. When you install Steam and start downloading games you will obviously need a larger capacity SSD.

2. If you reasonably competent and are happy to open up your PC, the next step is to unplug your Windows drive and using the spare port on your motherboard attach your new SSD drive.

3. Next boot up your PC and enter the BIOS to make sure your SSD drive has been detected. Shut down your machine and insert your USB flash drive containing the Linux Mint .iso.

4. Power on your machine and press F8 to enter the motherboard bootloader. (Many motherboards have this function, the exact key or key combination depends on your motherboard)

5. Select the USB flash drive from the BIOS bootloader, and boot in to the Linux Mint live desktop. From there install Linux Mint to your new drive.

6. Once installation is complete, remove your USB flash drive and shut down your machine.

7. Plug in your Windows drive, and power up your machine.

8. Press F8 again for the Bios bootloader or key / key combination for your own motherboard. You will then have the option to either boot in to Windows or Linux Mint.

If you don't like Linux Mint then you can try a different Linux distribution by writing the .iso file to your USB flash drive again and repeat the process above again.
